ERRANDS to a lunch DATE, ONE FIT
can it really be as simple as cuffed vs. uncuffed?
apparently… yes!
and I have my tight schedule to thank for that revelation. one of those days where you’re running around Chicago, answering emails in your head, grabbing this, dropping off that and suddenly you have 20 minutes to turn “errands” into “Michelin Guide pasta moment” at Tortello in Wicker Park.
I loved my outfit already. I was comfortable. I felt like myself. the only question was, could it pass for lunch that felt a little special?
spoiler > it could.
ERRANDS run
you already know I reach for my camo pants constantly. they’re basically a neutral in my closet at this point. (If you’ve been here a minute, you’ve seen them styled every possible way. fits here.)
they’re relaxed, a little unexpected (esp for we Gen Xer’s), and somehow always look intentional…which is exactly what I want from an everyday fit.
winter is the only time they test me. wide leg + chicago wind? not ideal. so I layer…either leg warmers or over-the-knee socks underneath. for this run-around-the-city situation, I went full cozy with the over-the-knee socks.
cuffed camo. thick wool socks. Boston mule Birks.
easy. walkable. warm. (Non-negotiable.)
and here’s what I love about this combo: I can wear the thickest sock in my drawer and the shoe still fits. no squeezing. no sacrificing circulation for style. clearly, you know I’ve done that (from my anything-for-fashion days) but we are not doing that again in this era of my life.
lunch DATE
this one was a special date…a double birthday celebration. and the setting? Tortello in Wicker Park. Michelin Guide recommended. handmade pasta. city energy. yo…expectations >> high.
I had about five minutes between grocery drop-off, organizing a pull on my styling rack and walking back out the door. I caught one look at myself in my fit mirror (you know the one, you all have one, by the main door before you head out into the world).
and I loved my fit! but I also knew it needed some tweaking for this lunch.
the shift was simple : the shoe. the Boston Birks were perfect for errands…cozy, grounded, practical. but for a Michelin Guide pasta situation? a little too relaxed.
so I swapped them for a current slim-profile slip-on loafer. not the chunky-tread sole kind. not the heavy leather either. a feminine, almost menswear Italian shape with a sleek sole kind.
Then I uncuffed the camo pants.
that one move changed the entire silhouette. suddenly they felt more like trousers than weekend pants. the loafer sat back quietly but absolutely held its own against the pattern mixing happening up top. It didn’t compete. It added detail to the fit.
same base outfit. different intention.
the fit
that’s a cut-out at the elbow, and that’s my elbow lol!
FIT CHK » overcast winter day, mid 20’s, running around west town & whicker park.
WHAT WAS I THINKING » I needed lightweight but also warm and my base layers are exactly that. this turtleneck is technically not a true base layer, but I treat it as one. this one is made by Nanushka, great neutral pattern and the cut-outs at the elbow give it that fashion detail. I love the overall pattern mixing esp while running around town casually…very intentional dressing yet equally easy & effortless. the pattern mixing (and hello! pink socks!) I thought was perfect for that special lunch as well…it’s giving, I-gave-the-get-together-some-considered-thought 🖤 🤎 which I love to do btw!
PS..got several compliments that day! camo pattern mixing for the win!
